One of the most interesting periods in the history of photography is undoubtedly the inter-war period, when the standards of modern photography were defined in terms of modernism versus modernity, modernity versus academicism. For twenty years, the Paris photographic scene alone condensed all these issues.

The search for form and meaning rubbed shoulders with advertising and fashion photography, while press photography freed itself from the stereotypes inherited from the nineteenth century. A complete artist, Alfred Latour was in tune with the contemporary moment, inspired by the unique creative energy of the period. At the crossroads of different practices, his ambition was to break down the barriers between genres.
